Towards the end of the 19th Century some of the larger United Free Church congregations were asked to sponsor the building of churches in the expanding areas of Glasgow. It was agreed that a church should be built for the North Woodside area sponsored by the congregation of tht College Church. James Stevenson as an elder offered to meet a large part of the cost of building. It was to be a memorial to his father Nathaniel and a younger brother of the same name who died while studying for the ministry.
A cousin – John James Stevenson was appointed as architect.
In 1897 after difficulties with the site and objections from a neighbouring church the original plan was abandoned. A new location at Belmont Bridge was approved by Presbytery. Building was to begin in 1898 and estimated to cost £10,000. When completed it cost £20,000.
On 27 february 1902 the building was deicated by Dr. Alexander Whyte of St. George’s, Edinburgh. Rev. William Clow was inducted as the first minister. The opening service was on Sunday 2 March conducted by Dr. George Reith of College Church. The afternoon preacher was Principal Denny. Evening service was led by Rev. Clow.
